Toorak College has developed an Intensive English Language Centre (IELC) to support international students. The Centre allows students to participate in all School activities while they are acquiring the language skills to work in mainstream English language classrooms.
There are 3 stages in our IELC Program:
1. Diagnostic Testing:
Toorak College students are tested to ascertain their English language proficiency. Students are placed into classes based on the results of this testing.
2. Language Acquisition:
Students who are identified as 'Beginner to Intermediate' are placed into the IELC full-time. Students in the IELC participate in a modified course, which includes Mathematics, Geography, Science, Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking, Research and Information Technology. A language profile is developed for each student which shows their progress. You progress into mainstream study when you have achieved 'Upper Intermediate level.
3. Transition:
Some students go straight to mainstream after a short orientation, others progress to a 'Transition Program' which includes mainstream and IELC classes. During the transition stage you adapt to working in full-time English language classes. At this stage you are supported through English Language Extension classes.
