Primary Years Program K-6

Our Primary Years Program (PYP) commences in the Early Learning Centre for 3 year olds and continues through to Year 6 for girls and boys in a co-educational setting. We provide opportunities for students to learn in a considered and sequential manner. Learning through inquiry is emphasised as the basis on which our programs are designed and learning is facilitated.

Toorak College is committed to the education of the whole person. We seek to empower and inspire students through education, emphasising the intellectual, personal, emotional and social development of every child. Our learning programs are designed to challenge and engage our students, to be relevant academically and developmentally and to enable students to be truly capable young people.

The Primary Years Program emphasises the importance of transdisciplinary learning, recognising that learning should be authentic and students need opportunities to learn beyond the boundaries of separate subject areas. The development of language and mathematical skills and knowledge is essential for all students and provides a critical base from which transdisciplinary learning occurs. Students learn about language and mathematics, whilst also learning through language, mathematics, the arts, history, geography, science, and technology within the Units of Inquiry. The acquisition of literacy and numeracy skills is essential as it is these skills which provide students with the tools of inquiry. Through the program of inquiry students explore challenging concepts, realising and respecting that our world is enriched by the diversity of cultures and the multiple perspectives they bring.

The Learner Profile provides a set of ideals that inspires, motivates and focuses the work of schools and teachers, uniting them in a common purpose. This profile guides us in our relationships with each other and impacts on the development of our learning programs, encouraging all members of our learning community to be:

  • Caring
  • Communicators
  • Inquirers
  • Knowledgeable
  • Open minded
  • Principled
  • Reflective
  • Risk takers
  • Thinkers
  • Balanced
