Years 5 & 6

Years 5 and 6 students are provided with opportunities to develop their own understanding of responsible citizenship in a dynamic and changing world and the importance of making informed decisions.

Students are recognised as leaders in our school and are supported as they take on a variety of leadership roles. As members of a learning community and as individuals students in Years 5 and 6 are challenged to develop independence. Students recognise they can be capable and responsible members of the community by taking positive action and providing service to others.

The introduction of the notebook computer program enables students to develop their Information and Communication Technology skills. Students use this technology as a tool to facilitate learning throughout the learning program.

The Outdoor Education Program in Year 5 includes a four day trip to Sovereign Hill enabling students to experience history from a range of different perspectives; through observation, role play, technology and experiential workshops. An urban experience allows students to explore the city and experience the tastes, sounds, smells and feel of Melbourne. Year 5 students also have the opportunity to develop their life saving skills at Point Leo.

Year 6 students develop a greater awareness of civics and citizenship, as they explore the role of government through their journey to Canberra in term one.The Toorak College sports program provides students with opportunities to participate in competitive team sports against schools in the local area. Sporting teams are comprised of students from both year levels training and competing throughout winter.

There is a strong emphasis on the Performing Arts in the lead up to the annual Year 6 Musical Production. Through choir, playing in the ensemble, music and movement classes and optional private instrumental lessons, students participate in a variety of ways.
