After attending primary school in Wangaratta, Barbara was sent to board at Toorak College, Mt Eliza for her secondary schooling. After leaving school Barbara attended RMIT, completing an associate diploma in Medical Technology and later graduating with a Bachelor of Applied Science. Throughout her career, Barbara specialised in histopathology and spent the next thirty-seven years working in various laboratories, mostly in Melbourne, taking a special interest in carbohydrate histochemistry. ‘I also taught part-time at RMIT for over twenty years and this was a highlight of my career – being able to teach young scientists was extremely rewarding.’ Before retiring to Wangaratta in 2003, Barbara was the senior medical scientist in charge of the routine histology laboratory in the Anatomical Pathology Unit at the Alfred Hospital’s Bayside Health Service. During her career, Barbara also served as Chairman of the Histology Group Victoria (1982–1983) and was the AIMS State Representative for the National Committee of Continuing Education (1982–1983). During her time in Melbourne, Barbara became involved again with Toorak College, serving as President of the Toorak Collegians Committee on two occasions, as a Board member for seventeen years and Chairman for eight. Her involvement continues today as a volunteer on the archives committee. Today Barbara’s many commitments include involvement with Cathedral College Wangaratta, she is also the Director and Lady President of Wangaratta Golf Club and heavily involved in the Cancer Council Wangaratta Volunteer Group as group leader and Chairman of the Cancer Council’s Wangaratta Relay For Life. For her services to the community through her volunteer roles with the Cancer Council of Victoria, Barbara was awarded an OAM.
