School News

From the Principal

Welcome to the first edition of TC News for 2018. TC News is published before each term commences to inform you of important dates, opportunities, programs and developments that are happening around the school each term. This is an important publication for families to read to remain up to date with all that happens at Toorak College. There are many other ways to stay connected at Toorak College. We encourage you to download our app, watch the monthly Daisy Chain video blog and read our email communications throughout the year.

The early years of education are crucial for developing foundations skills in numeracy and literacy but also integral for forming social connections. From 2019 we will move to a more consistent program for our youngest students. In the 3 year old Kinder program, parents can enrol their child in a 2, 3 or 5 day program. The 4 year old Pre Prep program will run over 3, 4 or 5 days. The days that the classes run will be fixed for the whole class to ensure more structured programs, curriculum delivery and stability in friendship development.

With some changes to the executive team for the start of 2018, Mrs Diane Furusho and Mrs Mandy Whitworth will continue in their roles as Head of Senior School and Head of Junior School (Wardle House) respectively, but will also hold the positions of Deputy Principal. Every year level is as integral as the next and we are proud to have our leadership team completely engaged with the students in the school.

Our curriculum is designed around developing the necessary skills of problem solving, inquiry, creation and collaboration. A recent study conducted by PISA (Program for International Student Assessment) investigated for the first time how students around the world perform when working in teams. Australian students were in the top 10 countries for working together to solve problems. We know these skills will be vital for the future workforce and hope that your child engages both in the classroom and in the broader extra-curricular program, working together with others to bring out their best.

Important Health Services Information

Our school policy relating to medical conditions requires that students diagnosed at risk of anaphylaxis and allergy (including hayfever and eczema), asthma, diabetes or/and epilepsy start the 2018 academic year with a medical action/management plan, signed and dated by a doctor. This plan must be valid from the start to end of the academic year. The preferred Action Plans are available on iVE / Information Services / Health Services, for you to download, at your convenience.

Students will not be permitted to attend school, excursions, incursions and camps without this important medical documentation. It is the responsibility of parents to supply this documentation to the school via Caremonkey or directly to Health Services, before the start of Term 1, 2018. For those at risk of anaphylaxis and allergy/s the ASCIA care plans will only be accepted in colour as per the legal requirements set out in the Ministerial Order 706.

Please assist us in our common cause and provide the relevant information by Wednesday 31 January 2018.

ELC update

Wominjeka, a warm welcome to our Early Learning Centre community. I hope that you have had a lovely Christmas and that the holidays afforded great adventures and time to relax and just be. The ELC Staff are excited and looking forward to catching up with families to hear all about the holidays.

Term 1 in the Early Learning Centre is promising to be another action packed time with many opportunities for shared discovery amongst the Early Learning Centre community.

The Pre Prep Science program will focus on science inquiry, and through their collaboration, children will observe ‘Change’.

The 3 year old programs will investigate the many different ways to build relationships.

This term the focus will be on settling in and developing a sense of belonging within a class group. Developing strong relationships is the cornerstone to effective learning in the Early Learning Centre.

Please refer to the Wardle House update for a full list of Key Dates relating to Wardle House.

The PYP Units of Inquiry for this term are:

3 Year Old: Who we are
Central Idea: Building relationships helps us to develop who we are.

4 Year Old: Who we are
Central Idea: Working together helps us to learn about ourselves and each other.

Wardle House update

Happy New Year and a warm welcome to our new and returning Wardle House community. I trust that you have had a lovely holiday with an opportunity for some rest and adventure with family and friends. We have an exciting year ahead at Toorak College and I look forward to welcoming our students back to school on Wednesday.

On the first day back, the eldest child in the family will receive a welcome pack from our Principal, Mrs Kristy Kendall. Following your feedback last year, this pack contains important information outlining improvements to iVE, reporting, communication, sport and music. Additionally, details about our 2018 parent and community engagement and wellbeing program ‘Bringing Out Their Best’. We have four sessions planned throughout the year and I encourage you to attend the Term 1 sessions. For parents of students in Years 5-12, our guest speaker Dannielle Miller will outline how fostering gratitude in our children helps them to develop the skills they need for fulfilling and successful futures. Parents of children in the ELC to Year 4 will listen to guest speaker Anthony Semann who will explore bringing the best out of children, the importance of resilience and navigating challenging behaviour.

Many opportunities will be provided to connect and partner throughout 2018, and you can expect a weekly email from me outlining key events with timely reminders. Don’t forget to visit the Wardle House iVE page on a regular basis to access up to date information and notices.

Senior School update

Happy New Year! I hope that you have all had a relaxing and enjoyable summer break. There are many things we have to look forward to this year and I wish all our Toorak families a wonderful 2018.

It is not long now until we welcome the return of our students to school on Wednesday. At the same time we will be welcoming many new students and their families to Toorak College and I hope they are as excited as we are to have them join us.

Term 1 is always filled with lots of events so please take note of the dates below that are relevant to your daughter’s year level. I especially look forward to seeing you at our Parent Information Night on Tuesday 6 February. This is an opportunity to meet the Heads of Year and Tutors, as well as listen to Dannielle Miller speak to us about gratitude.

There have been many changes to the teachers and administration offices over the summer break. In particular, the Senior School Office is now located where the Business Office used to be and is accessible via the Cloisters. Student Services has also moved and is now located where Finance was. The entrance for Students Services is on the ground level just near the café and boom gate.

I encourage every one of you to embrace the ‘spirit’ and all our wonderful school has to offer in 2018.

Mrs Diane Furusho
Head of Senior School, Deputy Principal

    Music

    Music

A new year is here, along with some exciting new activities! We encourage all students to get involved with some of these exciting new opportunities the Music Department has on offer.

In 2018 we will see the inaugural Toorak College Piano Competition. This will allow every piano student to enter in age/standard appropriate heats with a glittering Final in Term 3. Details are available through your piano teacher. If you learn piano outside Toorak College you are most welcome to compete. Please contact Mrs Turner for further details.

Song writers! An original song writing festival will take place in Terms 2 and 3. Stay tuned!

‘Wednesday Sounds’ is an opportunity for students to try musical instruments, form their own bands or just spend some time chilling in the Music Department. Wednesdays are all yours! Glee is also a new popular activity which began in late 2017. Glee competitions are a possibility for those interested in representing Toorak College.

This term we will again welcome parents to our Music Parent Information Evening – a great opportunity to chat with the music instrumental and vocal staff, and a must for families new to Toorak. We have moved our Autumn Concert to early in Term 2 so that ensembles have the opportunity to better prepare for their first performance of the year.

Please note that the Term 1 Soiree is in the final week, but has moved to Monday evening. For a full list of dates of musical performances for the year, pick up the ‘Music Gig Guide 2018’ from the Music Office.

Information is available from the Music Office for all enquiries relating to music lessons, ensemble membership and audition requirements – there have been changes, so come and find out more about getting involved.

Music lessons begin as Instrumental teachers advise of day and time. Ensemble rehearsals will begin in Week 2. This year we welcome new staff member Mr Chris Bevens as saxophone specialist, and welcome back Mr Malcolm Huddle who is now our clarinet specialist.

Auditions for the 2018 Senior Musical Production ‘The Little Mermaid' will take place in Term 1. Students wishing to be a cast member or play in the band should register their interest with Mrs Turner.

Information and good advice is always available from our 2018 Music Captain, Camryn J.

    Arts

    Visual Arts and Technology

With the wonderful results, awards, experiences and achievements of 2017 setting in the background, we look to 2018 with excitement. Art Club will be up and running again in Term 1 with lots of opportunities for students to gain skills, discuss ideas and be part of collaborative works or just dabble in the world of making and creating.

This year we will be working more closely with other areas of the school in order to provide real world problem solving, creative design and innovation solution opportunities for the students to work through where relevant.

We will also see the re-introduction of Arts Week during Term 2 and we are hoping that we can build on the successes achieved in the past and work with the new student leadership groups to create an interesting and fun program and connect with the Arts community.

At the end of Term 1, the VCE Art and Design students will spend a day in the city visiting galleries and art spaces and places. We will have the chance to see our Season of Excellence representatives: Sarah T, (Top Screens), gain inspiration, ideas and be part of this important excursion. Congratulations to Chloe HS (shortlisted for Top Designs).

Lastly, a huge congratulations to our star 2017 Visual Arts prefect, Sophie F, who not only represented Toorak College so well in her leadership roles, but was selected for Top Arts 2017, won a number of other prizes and awards and recorded a perfect score of 50 in Visual Communication Design.

    Drama and Dance

Term 1 will certainly be a busy time for students wishing to be involved in the Drama and Dance productions in 2018.

Dance Star is running again in 2018 after a wonderfully successful first year. Dance Star is a competition based dance program which involves students learning a choreographed piece, rehearsing and performing as part of a team. There are currently three 2018 teams - one in Wardle House and two in the Senior School. Auditions were held last year and if any student who has not auditioned and wishes to be involved in Dance Star there will be another set of auditions early Term 1.

The musical for 2018 is the 'The Little Mermaid' and the auditions for this show will be held during Term 1. The cast will be made up of a singing chorus and a seperate dance chorus. There will also be opportunities for students to be involved in the many behind the scenes crews. All information regarding audition dates and rehearsals will be posted for the students to access on the Drama and Dance co-curricular iVE page.

    Parents and Friends

    Update from P&F

The Toorak College Parents & Friends committee plays an active role throughout the Toorak community to coordinate activities, promote goodwill and engender friendship within the parent body, to encourage participation, communication and involvement and raise funds to provide facilities and equipment to enhance the school programs.

The P&F is an open environment for all parents and friends of students of Toorak College to participate. While there are the appointed Executive and Committee Members, we welcome all who are interested to join the meetings and to participate in the events. It is with the dynamic mix of members that the P&F has been able to build a series of successful and lively community events that are well anticipated each year and set in to the School calendar.

On Wednesday 21 February 2018 the P&F AGM will be held at 7:00pm in the Norman Carson Senior Library where all four Executive and six Committee positions will be vacated and open for election. The AGM will be followed by the first of the scheduled P&F meetings for the new school year. The invitation and relevant forms for the AGM can be found on the iVE P&F page, found under 'School Community'. Should you be interested in any of the Executive or Committee positions, please complete the nomination form, or if you are unable to attend and wish to vote, a proxy form is also available on this page.

Please visit the P&F page on IVE/School Community/Parents & Friends for the Expression of Interest link and more information about the wonderful work of the 'Friends of' groups, which offer unique ways to be involved in the areas that are of particular interest to you and your child. Contact details for all existing members can also be found on the P&F page on iVE, and we are all available to discuss any questions about the P&F you may have.

Early in the year, look out for your invitation to the much loved and celebrated Mother’s Day Breakfast, the first event for the year hosted by the P&F in the Mary Herring Hall. This event is a wonderful celebration of a Mother’s love with beautifully laid table settings, exceptional catering, generous gifts and giveaways kindly donated by many Toorak family businesses and connections.

Throughout the year the P&F will announce their calendar of events for the Toorak community and we sincerely hope to see many new and existing families at such events as the Father’s Day Breakfast and the P&F Cocktail Party.

There are many ways to participate, not always requiring of your time. To assist with our ongoing support of the school, the P&F wish to appeal to the school community for donation of goods and services that could be utilised for events and fundraising initiatives throughout the year. This could be in the form of products or services that can be used for door prizes, raffles, hampers, gift bags and silent auctions. We appreciate that support comes in many forms and your donation would enable the P&F to raise funds to provide facilities and equipment that will enhance school programs. All businesses will be recognised for their donations.

If you can assist please register via the following link, and we will contact you to arrange collection of your donation.

We look forward to an exciting year ahead and will use upcoming editions of TC News to keep you updated on the outcomes of each event, along with announcing key dates for your reference.

    Collegian News

Notable Collegian - Calypso Owen (TC ’14)

Toorak Collegians recently caught up with Calypso Owen (TC ’14) to find out what she has been up to since leaving Toorak College.

After developing a love for the humanities at Toorak College, Calypso continued this interest into university where she studied a Bachelor of Arts at Monash Clayton, majoring in Ancient Cultures and Literature. Soon into her studies, Calypso had her sights set on becoming an archaeologist and so supplemented her electives with ancient Australian history from the Monash Indigenous Centre. During her degree, Calypso was fortunate enough to attend a three week study tour of Rome and Tuscany as an intensive unit towards her degree. This year she will be completing her honours thesis in ancient cultures, and will be studying the Scythian culture of late bronze age nomadic warriors in Eastern Europe. Calypso currently works as an Assistant Archaeologist with an archaeology and cultural heritage consultancy agency based in Coburg, which is a job she won through volunteering as a helper on their excavation projects in 2017. Calypso volunteered across three sites, covering both Indigenous and historic/colonial archaeology – an amazing experience Calypso will never forget. Up next, Calypso hopes to pursue a masters study and continue with consultancy work in Australia.

Calypso cherishes her time at Toorak College where she was encouraged to follow her passion. A keen competitor on the rowing, swimming and water polo teams, Calypso still has an association with her School as a rowing coach for Toorak College’s senior crew this year.
