School News
From the Principal
I am looking forward to welcoming everyone back at the beginning of Term 3, including our new staff and students, and hearing about where your adventures took you. Mine took me to Washington DC for the Global Forum on Girls' Education.
It was an amazing opportunity for leaders in Girls' Education from 22 different countries to come together and talk about what we need to create for the students in our schools to ensure our graduates lead happy and successful lives beyond our walls.
One of my favourite speakers was the inspirational Billie Jean King. She spoke on many topics that were important to her, in particular, the importance of young girls being proud of their achievements and not being too modest about them. She strongly believes we need to continually encourage our young women to not apologise for their successes but to embrace them. This, we know, is something that an all-girl environment instills in students.
She also spoke about equality and how much she dislikes people thanking her for what she did for women’s tennis. She is very clear about correcting this misconception. She did not do it for women’s tennis she did it for tennis. Just because a woman speaks out, it does not become a women’s issue. It is an issue in its own right. Just because a woman is a leader, it does not make them a role model for girls. They are role models for everyone. She is hopeful that this generation understands that better than any other. Earlier this year Roger Federer was asked who the best tennis player ever was. He responded; Serena Williams. The interviewer corrected himself and said 'sorry I said best player ever, not best women’s player ever'. Roger stood firm, 'yes I answered the question, Serena Williams is the best tennis player ever'.
I would like to thank the members of our community who completed the survey at the end of last term regarding the future direction of Toorak College as we form our new strategic plan. It was amazing to see how aligned parents, staff and Collegians were in their thoughts and priorities in many areas. The feedback showed that integrity above all else is what we need to value throughout the school community. It also highlighted the importance of building critical and adaptive thinking, social and emotional intelligence and resilience in our students. We look forward to continuing work on the strategic plan across the rest of the semester and sharing it with you in the new year.

Ms Melissa Schoorman will commence her new role this term, as Head of Wardle House and Deputy Principal. An authority on literacy and numeracy in the primary years, Melissa has a proven ability to help students reach their potential. She is passionate about working with families to bring out the best in her students and is an expert in pastoral care, learning support and learning extension programs. Please join us in welcoming Melissa to our community.
“My passion is to ensure all students are given an equal opportunity to succeed and are inspired by school life. I endeavour at all times, to provide an environment that nurtures the whole child, caters for individual needs and differences whilst always believing in a child’s capacity to succeed.”

Bianca will play a pivotal role in acting as a catalyst between our students and our school and the world of work locally and globally.
Farewell to Mrs Linda Howey
After 29 years of teaching at Toorak, we have farewelled a much loved and respected teacher, Mrs Linda Howey. After enjoying her Long Service Leave in Term 2, Linda has now commenced a new role away from the world of teaching. We thank Linda for her dedication and professionalism over her time at Toorak College and wish her all the best in her new adventures.
Meet our Spiritual Education Coordinator
My name is Jessica Koch and I have the privilege of being the Spiritual Education Coordinator at Toorak College. I have been part of the school community since 2015, teaching in Wardle House, and took on this new role at the beginning of 2018. I have a Bachelor in Primary Education and a certificate in Chaplaincy. Currently, I am studying towards a Masters Degree in Theology and I am very passionate about student wellbeing and pastoral care.
Something that is beautiful and unique about our school is that we have an inviting Chapel facility. The space welcomes anyone to come in, reflect and connect with others. My hope is that each person in our school community leaves the Chapel inspired - that what is experienced and learnt goes far beyond its four walls. I am excited to see students continue to grow in self-confidence, empathy, resilience and authenticity. It has truly been an honour and joy to meet so many students in the first semester and I look forward to building relationships with students and parents across the school community this year.

Early Learning
Term 2 proved to be another successful time in the Early Learning Centre with a great deal of continued learning, increased knowledge and extending of children’s skills. In the Kindergarten programs this term we have focused on supporting children to further develop their ability to build and maintain friendships. This has involved shared collaborative play where children need to listen to others’ ideas as well as sharing their own.
We have observed that in small groups, children have created their own special play spaces, both in the indoor and outdoor environment. These imaginative spaces have included colourful cubbies, a vet surgery, camping and the home corner. Through these experiences the children are exploring their identity and sharing their culture.
The Pre-Prep 4 year old program investigated the many changes that occur in our world every day. Throughout this inquiry there was a strong focus on children identifying both environmental changes and changes that occur within our behaviour, our skills and our knowledge.
The Mother’s Day morning tea, Pyjama Breakfast, One song drumming incursion and the McClelland Sculpture Park excursion were all highlights of the term.
Term 3 in the Early Learning Centre is promising to be another action packed time with many opportunities for shared discovery. The Pre-Prep Science program will focus on science inquiry through the lens of outdoor exploration. ‘Mini Beasts Discovery’, ‘Patterns and Stories’ and ‘Exploring Shadows’ will be the three science experiments investigated.
The Kindergarten 3 year old program will investigate the many different ways of caring for their environment, with a STEM focus.
This term we will eagerly welcome our ELC grandparents who are so incredibly valued and hold a special place in each child’s life. Of course, Term 3 would not be the same without our Father’s Day footy morning and the annual Book Week parade. What book character will your child come dressed as?
The PYP Units of Inquiry for this term are:
3 Year Old: Sharing the planet.
Central Idea: Together we care for our environment.
4 Year Old: Sharing the planet
Central Idea: Children embrace diversity with respect.

As the new Head of Wardle House, Deputy Principal, I am delighted to take this opportunity to introduce myself to the Toorak College community. To be given the opportunity to lead Wardle House is a privilege and an exciting opportunity to build on our school’s excellent education model with new innovative learning opportunities. I believe that for our students to reach their full potential, it is vital for our students, parents and teachers to work together. Along with the dedicated staff at Wardle House, I am here to offer support and I look forward to getting to know you all over the coming term.
It has been great to hear from Ms Helenor Regester about all that has taken place in Wardle House last term.
During Term 2, students continued to investigate the 5 C’s: confidence, commitment, cooperation, curiosity and creativity. These 5 PYP attitudes are a vital focus in the development of our attitudes towards learning, people and the environment and are intertwined into the fabric of our daily school life. The Student Conferences, gave students the opportunity to showcase their new learning and understandings.
The Year 6 production of ‘Shrek Jr.’ was a highlight of the term. The performances were truly outstanding, as were the costumes and scenery. Students collaborated while they embraced the production process and developed key acting and vocal skills.
I want to take this opportunity to thank our parent community for their continued support. In particular, the Friends of Wardle House who organised the Mother’s Day stall and a delicious Special Lunch to celebrate the last day of term.
We have much to look forward to this term, including Book Week and our Father’s Day Breakfast. I also encourage all parents to attend our upcoming Parent Information Series event, ‘Raising Resilient Teens’ on Wednesday 29 August. Speaker, Collett Smart, is a psychologist, qualified teacher, lecturer and writer and is an expert in teen and family issues.
Thank you for welcoming me into the Wardle House community and I look forward to meeting you soon.

What an action-packed Term 2 we all enjoyed. With so much activity taking place around the school, the girls remained focussed and committed to their academic studies. For the many girls who ended the term with exams, I wish to congratulate them all on how well they are balancing the many activities they are involved in, whilst maintaining their strong work ethic towards their learning.
Highlights of Term 2 included Year 9 City Exploration Week; Alice Sloan Walks of Life; Prefect Cluedo Evening; Year 8 Monologues night; the Year 9 & VCE performance of ‘Picnic at Hanging Rock’; Year 10 Social; Year 11 Formal; Debating & Public Speaking competitions; lots of sport (with our Intermediate Hockey Girls team taking out the championship); music nights including the girls travelling to the Generations in Jazz weekend at Mount Gambier; and a wonderful Arts Week.
My door is always open for the girls to come in and chat to me about anything that is going on in their lives. Some of the common things they will say is that they are feeling anxious, having friendship challenges, struggling with their studies and at times feeling overwhelmed with all that is going on in their busy lives. My reply is that these feelings are normal and that from time to time we all feel this way. We then talk about what we can do about this. Building resilience, knowing that challenges are a part of life and how we deal with these, thinking about positive strategies moving forward and what we can implement to overcome these, is what is most important. Every time a challenge is met by our girls, which also includes failure, making mistakes and what they can learn from it, will help prepare our girls for life. Collett Smart will be speaking at our third parent information night on Wednesday 29 August, about ‘Raising Resilient Teens’, something we all want for our children.
In Term 3 we have a focus on careers, which includes subject selections. All Year 9 to 12 girls and parents are encouraged to attend the Futures Information Night and the Collegians Careers Event. Both these evenings will offer valuable information about subject selection, the ATAR and university pathways and their requirements. The Collegians event brings past students back to the school to talk about the various fields they are involved in and to give a real understanding of what the work place looks like. Our aim is to provide new and innovative opportunities and pathways for our girls so they can follow their passions and dreams.
I hope that you have all had a wonderful winter break and look forward to welcoming the girls back to school in Term 3.

Visual Arts
Arts Week turned out to be a very successful week full of activities including play with props, try a microphone, collaborative art pieces, paper portraits and learning new product design technology techniques to name a few. We had guest speakers and a final assembly video and interactive musical drum experience. Scattered throughout the week were the wonderful drama performances that took place after dark within the Toorak College grounds. This is the first time the school has embarked on this type of all inclusive Arts based experience and although we celebrate its success today we are already looking forward to how we can make it even better next year.

Drama and Dance
Term 2 has been a very exciting time filled with many performance opportunities for our Senior students.
The Little Mermaid rehearsals are well underway, our Year 8 students successfully performed their Life Monologues to parents in May and the Senior students participated in an Arts Week full of different workshops, activities, guest speakers and performances. The VCE and Year 9 Drama students staged a thrilling performance of Picnic at Hanging Rock in and around the gardens and buildings of the school. Our Dancestar teams from six Wardle House and the Senior school successfully competed at the Regionals and State finals and are all very excited to be heading to the National competition in August. In Term 3 the students will carry on with rehearsals and will perform The Little Mermaid at the George Jenkins Theatre in late August. The annual Dance Production 'So You Think You Can Dance' will also be staged at the George Jenkins Theatre. This event attracts dancers from Grade 3 right up to Year 12 and showcases our curricular and co-curricular Dance program. House Drama and Variety will also be staged in August and this day proves to be one that brings great joy to the school community. Our free lunchtime dance classes Dance For Fun series will continue this term as well.

Sports update
Term 2 was a busy term with Sport training and competitions every day of the week!
Our AFL, Netball, Water Polo, Hockey and Aerobics teams all celebrated a successful term.
AFL has continued to be a very popular sport for our students, with Toorak fielding three full teams in the Girls Sport Victoria AFL Competition. The highlight of the season was the inaugural AFL Bayside Derby which saw Toorak take on Mentone Girls' Grammar in a Friday night football extravaganza. Toorak won this match and brought home the trophy! Special thanks to Mt Eliza Junior Football Club for sharing their grounds with our teams for training and games.
Our Netball, Water Polo and Hockey teams all had successful seasons in the GSV weekly sport competition. Toorak Senior A Netball team and Junior C Netball teams both finished on top of the ladder, whilst our Intermediate Hockey A had an amazing season, winning the GSV Grand final, defeating MLC 2-1.
Toorak Aerobics teams continue to be a dominant force, with huge success at the State Championships. Seven Toorak teams qualified for Nationals. Our Senior Basketball teams competed in the GSV Senior Tournament; both teams finished winners in their division for the second consecutive year.

Update from P&F

The Toorak College Parents & Friends committee plays an active role throughout the Toorak community to coordinate activities, promote goodwill and engender friendship within the parent body to encourage participation, communication & involvement and raise funds to provide facilities & equipment to enhance the school programs.
The TC P&F is an open environment for all parents and friends of students of Toorak College to participate. While there are the appointed Executive and Committee Members, we welcome all who are interested to join the meetings and to participate in the events. It is with our dynamic mix of members that the P&F has been able to build a series of successful and lively community events that are well anticipated each year and set into the School calendar.
Last term the TC P&F hosted the much loved and celebrated Mother’s Day Breakfast. The first P&F event for the year, this was a sell out event! The breakfast was held in the Mary Herring Hall with beautifully laid table settings, exceptional catering, generous gifts and giveaways kindly donated by many Toorak family businesses and connections. Our guests were entertained by the wonderful Sinclair Chorale and were treated to a presentation from our guest speaker Wendy Orr, author of 'Nim’s Island' and 'Dragon Fly Song' children’s books, with opportunity for book signings.
Throughout the year the TC P&F will announce their calendar of events for the Toorak community. We sincerely hope to see many new and existing families at our next event, the Father’s Day Breakfast on Friday 31 August. If you would like to help us spoil the dads on their special day, please contact your TC P&F President, Elizabeth Lucarelli: bell.aliza@hotmail.com, 0402 810 345.
There are many ways to participate, not always requiring of your time. We appreciate that support comes in many forms and a donation of goods or services would enable the TC P&F to raise funds to provide facilities and equipment that will enhance school programs. Our major fundraiser for this year is the TC P&F Cocktail Party scheduled for a Saturday night in October, with funds raised from this event to be put towards the Science and Technology Centre. All individuals and businesses will be recognised for their donations. If you can assist with any donations please contact your TC P&F Treasurer, Karlee Browning: karleebrowning@gmail.com, 0418 176 244.
We look forward to an exciting second half of the year and to keeping you updated on the outcome of each event and to announcing what’s next.
Please visit the P&F page on iVE/School Community/Parents & Friends for the Expression of Interest link and more information about the wonderful work of the 'Friends of' groups, which offer unique ways to be involved in the areas that are of particular interest to you and your child. Contact details for all existing members can also be found on the P&F page on iVE, and we are all available to discuss any questions about the P&F you may have.
Everyone is invited to attend any of the scheduled P&F meetings, and we look forward to welcoming you on the following 2018 dates:
Term 3
Wednesday 8 August, 7:00pm
Wednesday 12 September, 7:00pm
Term 4
Wednesday 10 October, 7:00pm
Wednesday 21 November, 7:00pm
Unless otherwise specified, all meetings will be held in the Senior School Drawing Room.
