Christine Friday TC'64

Christine Friday TC’64 grew up in Barwite, just outside of Mansfield before heading to Toorak College as a Boarder from Form Three in 1961. After leaving Toorak College in 1964 Christine always wanted to be a primary teacher and studied for her Trained Primary Teachers’ Certificate at Toorak Teachers’ College situated at Stonnington in 1965 & 1966. Today, Christine’s love of travel, history and philanthropy occupies her time. We also welcomed Christine as a Founding Member of the Hamilton Society (Bequest Circle) in 2021.

Christine went on to spend the next several years teaching at infant, prep and primary schools across rural Victoria before deciding she wished to teach in Melbourne. Christine relocated to the area of Fitzroy where she enjoyed a teaching career for several more years. Christine then embarked on a three year travel expedition, and via ship, spent time discovering Europe.

Not long after her return to Australia, Christine completed her Special Teachers Certificate, enabling her to teach students with a physical disability, which she did for over twenty further years across Yooralla Glenroy and Bulleen Height School. Her teaching was occasionally interrupted by her love of travel, including travelling on the Trans Siberian Railway in the depths of winter, working on an archaeological dig in Israel and travelling around South America on the back of a truck.

Today, Christine’s love of travel, history and philanthropy occupies her time. Chris is valued guide for U3A Yarra City Melbourne Historic Walks and is a Founding Member of Fitzroy History Society. She has established the Harry and Clare Friday Foundation (named after her adoptive parents) in support of community health in the Mansfield district. She has established the Christine Friday and Kathleen Pooley Sub-Fund (named after her biological Mother) in support of Aboriginal women and girls in Victoria. Christine has also volunteered for organisations such as the Royal Flying Doctors Service, Guide Dogs Victoria, Melbourne Museum, and many more NFPs.

In recent year’s Christine’s love of her School has seen her contribute generously to enable the establishment of the Toorak College Digital Archives Collection and the establishment of the Christine Friday Arts and Humanities Scholarship. We also welcomed Christine as a Founding Member of the Hamilton Society (Bequest Circle) in 2021.
