Academic Support & Prep (Evening Study)

To help you stay on top of your schoolwork and build strong study habits, all boarders participate in Prep - a compulsory, supervised study block held every Monday through Thursday night.

Prep time is designed to give you a quiet, dedicated routine to complete your homework, revise for tests, and stay organised. The length of Prep varies depending on your year level.

What to Expect During Prep:

  • Dedicated Study Spaces: Designated, age-appropriate study areas tailored to each year level so you can focus

  • Academic & Staff Support: Experienced staff are on hand throughout every session to actively supervise, guide, and support you with your work.

  • A Quiet, Safe Environment: A calm, distraction-free space where everyone can work productively.

  • Tech-Free Focus Blocks: Scheduled device-free times to help protect your wellbeing, reduce digital distractions, and encourage written work.

  • Junior Reading Time: Dedicated compulsory reading blocks built into the weekly schedule for our junior boarders to unwind and develop strong literacy skills.

Meals in the Boarding House

Our on-site chef prepares fresh, nutritious, and delicious meals every day to keep you energised for study, play, and everything in between.

  • Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided during the week. On weekdays, you'll grab your hot or fresh lunch straight from the main school canteen.

  • Students can help themselves to self-serve snacks and fresh fruit

  • We know how important comfort food is! Every boarder gets a personal pantry & fridge drawer to store their favorite snacks and treats from home.

Your Room

Your bedroom is your private retreat where you can unwind, recharge, and truly make the space your own. We encourage all boarders to personalise their rooms with photos, decorations, and cozy touches.

  • Years 7–10 (Shared Twin Rooms): You’ll share a room with a classmate in your year level, making it easy to build lifelong friendships and adapt to boarding life together.

  • Years 11 & 12 (Private Single Rooms): Senior boarders enjoy their own private single room - a quiet, dedicated space designed to support independent study, focus, and personal downtime.

Hear from our Boarders and Families

"Our daughter's transition to adapt to boarding life and Toorak College only took several hours after we left her at Toorak on 25 January.

Her adaptation to the new life has been so amazingly surprising to us. Each time when we talk over the phone, her opening has always been I am so happy! To us this has been really a big relief when we leave her in a place that is so far away. We have seen her blossom in both her study and ex-curriculum activities. She is fully self-driven and independent and chasing excellence for herself.

We owe this to Toorak's friendly peer environment, well designed boarding life arrangement, excellent facilities, tremendous curriculum and ex-curriculum programs and most importantly marvelous teachers like you who care about them like your own.

We believe that choosing Toorak for our daughter to start her boarding life in Australia is the best choice we could ever make for her."

How are rooms allocated?

Rooms are allocated with another student from the same year level. At the beginning of each semester, students are re-roomed, giving them the opportunity to share with a new person and build friendships across the boarding community.

This approach helps students broaden their friendship networks while also developing important skills in communication, cooperation and adaptability, preparing them to confidently work and live alongside a wide range of people.

Where will I relax?

Our Boarding House offers a variety of welcoming spaces where you can relax, unwind, watch TV, or spend time with friends. With four dedicated lounge areas located throughout the house and tailored to different year levels, there is always a comfortable space to suit the occasion; whether you are looking for a quiet place to recharge or somewhere to connect with friends. You will soon find your own favourite spot to feel at home.

What happens on the weekends?

What happens on the holidays?

During Term 1, Term 2 and the End of Year, the boarding house closes, and all students travel home to spend time with their loved ones. Over the Term 3 holidays (September), the house remains open for VCE students, to take part in the VCE revision program. All year 7 to year 10 students are encouraged to travel home during these holidays. All belongings can stay in student rooms, so they only need to take home what they need for their holidays.

Does my daughter need pocket money for the weekends?

All costs associated with our weekend recreational program are included in the boarding fees. However, if your daughter would like to purchase additional snacks, drinks, souvenirs or other personal items during excursions, she will need to have access to her own spending money.

Each term, we also include at least two excursions to major shopping centres. These provide students with an opportunity to purchase their own meals and personal items such as clothing, shoes, bags and other essentials or treats.

If you provide your daughter with a larger amount of spending money, we are happy to securely store this in the boarding house safe. We can then provide her with an agreed amount each week, helping her manage her spending and ensuring that she have access to money throughout the term rather than spending it all at once.

What if my daughter is unwell?

During the school day students can visit the all female school nursing team. We have a range of health services in our local shopping village including Doctors, Dentists, Physio’s and Chemists.

How does my daughter do her laundry?

Students have access to two on-site laundries within the boarding house. As part of the boarding induction process, all students will be shown how to safely and correctly use the washing machines and dryers.

We will provide laundry detergent for students when they first arrive. Once this initial supply has been used, students will be responsible for purchasing their own detergent. We also have an outdoor clothesline available for students who prefer to air-dry their laundry.

If your daughter chooses to use school-provided linen, this will be professionally laundered for her. If she chooses to bring her own linen, she will be responsible for washing and maintaining it herself.

Students are responsible for laundering all of their own uniform items

How can I contact my daughter?

You can keep in regular contact with your daughter via her personal device. We encourage video calls to keep in touch. Personal devices are locked away during the day whilst at school and overnight. An urgent message can be sent directly to the Head of Boarding via email, WeChat or WhatsApp.

Please ensure you have connected with Courtney Edwards, Head of Boarding prior to your daughters commencement on either WeChat (ToorakC_HoB), WhatsApp (0447 306 499) or email (courtneye@toorakc.vic.edu.au).
