Music

At Toorak College, we believe that music is an integral part of education and of life. We believe that every student should have access to a range of music opportunities. Music participation fosters creativity, collaboration and improves cognitive function.

Our students are encouraged to participate in our Music Program, which nurtures leadership and teamwork skills, provides a sense of belonging and encourages confidence in performing.

Music education at Toorak College creates a strong sense of community, and encourages the pursuit of excellence, with no divide between the Junior School and Senior School. It is about giving students a chance for their creativity to shine and develop their identities as individuals.

I would teach children music, physics and philosophy; but most importantly music, for the patterns in music and all the arts are the keys to learning.

The Music Centre

Opened in 2011 by legendary jazz musician James Morrison, our state-of-the-art Music Centre has 14 modern rehearsal rooms, 11 individual lesson rooms, with spaces for performances, ensembles, as well as composing and recording using technology.

Ensembles and Groups

There are many opportunities for Toorak College students to perform in a diverse range of ensembles. The joys and benefits of rehearsing and performing in an ensemble range from a feeling of belonging and connectedness, to working towards a common goal to create a piece of beauty. Our ensembles are open to students who learn an instrument or voice at school, or learn externally. Students are able to reinforce what is learned in private lessons in the ensemble rehearsal and develop greater listening and interpretation skills in a supportive group setting.
